Understanding HPV and Cervical Cancer
What is HPV?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can infect both men and women, affecting different areas of the body. There are more than 100 different strains of HPV, classified into:
- High-Risk HPV Strains: Linked to cancers such as cervical, vaginal, vulva, anal, and penile cancers. HPV types 16 and 18 are the most prevalent high-risk strains.
- Low-Risk HPV Strains: May cause genital warts but are not typically associated with cancer. Strains 6 and 11 cause approximately 90% of genital warts cases.
How is HPV Related to Cervical Cancer?
HPV can infect the cervix, vagina, and vulva. While many infections are cleared by the immune system, some persistent infections can cause abnormal cell changes that may develop into cervical cancer over time.
HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for approximately 70% of all cervical cancer cases
How is HPV Transmitted?
HPV is transmitted through:
- Skin-to-skin contact, including sexual intercourse
- Oral sex
- Shared contaminated sex toys
- Occasionally from mother to newborn during childbirth
Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms: Many HPV infections show no symptoms. High-risk HPV infections in the cervix are typically detected only through cervical screenings (Pap tests or HPV DNA tests). Signs of cervical cancer may include unusual vaginal bleeding and changes in vaginal discharge.
Treatment: About 90% of HPV infections resolve on their own. While there is no direct cure for HPV, treatment targets HPV-related conditions such as precancerous changes, cancer, or genital warts. Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure.

Why HPV Vaccination is Important
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent HPV-related cancers and diseases
Prevents Cervical Cancer
HPV vaccination significantly reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer, one of the most common cancers among women in Singapore.
Best Protection When Young
Vaccination is most effective when given before exposure to HPV, ideally before becoming sexually active.
Protects Future Generations
By preventing HPV transmission, vaccination helps protect not just yourself but also your future partners and family.
Safe and Effective
HPV vaccines have been extensively tested and proven safe, with millions of doses administered worldwide.
No Direct HPV Cure
Since there is no cure for HPV infection itself, vaccination remains the best preventive measure available.
Long-lasting Protection
HPV vaccines provide long-lasting immunity against the most dangerous cancer-causing HPV strains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's included in the Gardasil® 9 - 3-Dose Bundle?
The bundle includes all 3 doses of Gardasil® 9 vaccine at $784.80 (save $98.10 compared to purchasing separately at $294.30 per dose). The doses are administered over 6 months: first dose at booking, second dose after 2 months, third dose after 6 months. This bundle is ideal for individuals aged 15-45 who require the full 3-dose series.
Q: Who should get the HPV vaccine?
HPV vaccination is recommended for girls and boys starting at age 9. It’s most effective when given before exposure to HPV, ideally before becoming sexually active. However, adults up to age 45 can still benefit from vaccination. Consult our doctor to determine if HPV vaccination is right for you.
Q: What's the difference between Cervarix and Gardasil 9?
Cervarix protects against 2 high-risk HPV types (16 and 18) that cause most cervical cancers. Gardasil 9 offers broader protection against 9 HPV types, including 7 high-risk cancer-causing types and 2 types that cause genital warts. Both vaccines are highly effective at preventing cervical cancer.
Q: Do I need 2 doses or 3 doses?
The number of doses depends on your age at the first dose. Ages 9-14 typically need 2 doses given 6 months apart. Ages 15 and above need 3 doses over 6 months. Our 3-dose Gardasil® 9 package at $720 is perfect for those requiring the full series.
Q: Is the HPV vaccine safe?
Yes. HPV vaccines have been extensively tested and monitored for safety. Millions of doses have been administered worldwide. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, headache, or mild fever. Serious side effects are extremely rare.
Q: Do I still need cervical screening if I'm vaccinated?
Yes. While HPV vaccination significantly reduces cervical cancer risk, regular cervical screening (Pap smear) is still recommended as the vaccine doesn’t protect against all HPV types. Vaccination and screening together provide the best protection.
Q: Can I get vaccinated if I'm already sexually active?
Yes. Even if you’re already sexually active, HPV vaccination can still provide protection against HPV types you haven’t been exposed to. The vaccine is approved for use up to age 45. Consult our doctor to discuss your individual situation.
Q: Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are mild and temporary, including soreness at the injection site, headache, mild fever, or dizziness. These typically resolve within a day or two. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare. Our medical staff will monitor you after vaccination.
Q: Can males get the HPV vaccine?
Yes. Gardasil 9 is approved for both males and females. HPV vaccination for males helps prevent HPV-related cancers (anal, penile, throat) and genital warts. It also helps prevent transmission to partners.
Q: Should I get the bundle or pay per dose?
If you require the complete 3-dose Gardasil® 9 series (ages 15-45), the bundle package at $784.80 saves you $98.10 compared to paying $294.30 per dose. The bundle ensures you complete your full vaccination series at a significant discount. For ages 9-14 requiring only 2 doses, pay-per-dose may be more suitable.
